Porta Potties: 5 Fascinating Facts

There are many unsung heroes in the world, and while you might not initially consider porta potties to be one of them, these portable restrooms play an indispensable role in our day-to-day life, particularly at outdoor events.

With a lineage dating back to the late 1940s, there’s more to porta potties than meets the eye. Read on for some fascinating facts about these unassuming structures…

Fact #1: The Beginning Is Shipyards

The ubiquitous portable toilets, affectionately known as porta potties, have their origin in the shipbuilding industry of Long Beach, California. These seemingly unassuming units addressed a real need in an industrial context, rather than for outdoor events as you might think.

Back in the era of the late 1940s and early 1950s, shipyard workers faced an inconvenient and time-consuming problem: When nature called, these workers had to abandon their tasks, disembark the ship they were constructing, and make a sometimes significant trek back to the docks just to use the restroom facilities.

This not only consumed a substantial chunk of their working day but also impacted the overall productivity of the shipbuilding process, and such lengthy trips multiple times a day weren’t acceptable. It all required a practical solution, for efficiency and for keeping focus on the task at hand.

And so the portapotty was born. Small, portable units could be placed directly on the ship itself, eliminating the necessity to leave the worksite every time. This dramatically reduced the downtime and increased productivity among workers, significantly accelerating shipbuilding.

The portability, convenience and efficiency of these units were nothing short of a revolution in the industrial world. They provided a simple, cost-effective and high-impact solution to a significant operational challenge.

The construction industry, grappling with similar challenges, saw the potential. The sight of a portapotty became increasingly common at these sites, marking a new era in on-site sanitation. Providing construction workers with easily accessible sanitation facilities fostered a healthier, more productive working environment.

Fact #2: Vital to Disaster Management

When disaster strikes, clean and safe sanitation is one of the challenges emergency responders face. The key isn’t just providing immediate relief, but also preventing the occurrence of secondary disasters, like the outbreak of diseases due to inadequate sanitation.

Disasters, natural or human-made, can leave a devastating impact on existing infrastructure. Plumbing systems are often destroyed or made unusable, leaving people without access to essential sanitation. Due to their portability and independence from existing infrastructure, porta potty units can be rapidly deployed as disaster relief, providing immediate access to safe and clean toilet facilities.

Sanitation in the immediate aftermath of disaster is about more than just comfort, it’s a crucial preventive measure against the spread of disease. In conditions where people are living in close quarters, as in temporary shelters or camps, the risks of poor sanitation rise significantly. Pathogens and bacteria can easily thrive and multiply in unsanitary conditions, leading to diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. Portable toilets help control the spread of these diseases by providing a hygienic environment for waste disposal.

Rapid deployment is another element that makes porta potties ideal for disaster response. Their lightweight, self-contained design allows for quick transport and installation, making them highly adaptable. In an earthquake, hurricane, flood or human-made disaster, portable toilets can be airlifted, trucked, even hand-carried to the affected sites. This swift response helps in stabilizing the situation as further disaster relief efforts are put into action.

Fact #3: Porta Potties are Actually Very Green

The simple yet efficient design of the modern portable toilet significantly reduces water usage, making for a green solution in the world of sanitation.

A traditional indoor toilet uses around 1.6 gallons of water per flush, which can quickly add up. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), toilets account for nearly 30% of an average home’s indoor water consumption.

In contrast, portable toilets use an entirely different approach. Instead of using water to flush waste away, portable toilets use a small amount of blue sanitation liquid that breaks down waste, eliminates odor and reduces the spread of bacteria, requiring no additional water. Consequently, your typical portapotty uses a staggering 90% less water than its indoor counterpart.

If a standard indoor toilet uses approximately 1.6 gallons of water per flush, and on average we use the toilet around five times a day, that’s eight gallons of water per person each day.

Assuming a conservative estimate of around 15 users for a single portapotty in a day (which could be much higher at a crowded event), this equates to saving a whopping 120 gallons of fresh water daily by using a portapotty instead of a traditional toilet.

The savings don’t stop at the water either. With less water usage, there’s also a reduction in the energy and resources needed for water purification and sewage treatment, which adds another layer to the environmental benefits of using porta potties.

Fact #4: Ingenious Ventilation Systems

Despite their basic exterior, porta potties are marvels of practical engineering. Beneath this simple facade lies a carefully designed structure optimized for user comfort and hygiene.

One of the key features here is the built-in ventilation system, which serves a dual purpose: it not only manages odors but also enhances the overall user experience with a more pleasant internal environment. The close quarters and limited air circulation in such an enclosed space could quickly become unpleasant without proper ventilation, making a fresh and odor-free environment vital for comfort and hygiene.

But this airflow isn’t just crucial for managing smells, it also plays a significant role in managing internal humidity. Anyone who has used a portapotty in the summer knows how stifling it can get. The ventilation system alleviates this by reducing humidity buildup. The continual circulation dissipates the moist air, making the overall experience far more comfortable.

Fact #5: The Science of Sanitation

Porta potties are well-known for their signature blue liquid. This isn’t just a random choice of color! It’s the result of a specially designed solution that plays a crucial role in sanitation management within these facilities. This concoction, called “blueing,” is a blend of blue dye, fragrance and biocides. Each component in this trio has its specific contribution to the sanitation, odor control and disease prevention of portable toilets.

Aesthetically, the vibrant blue color provides a pleasant visual cue that the toilet is clean and ready for use. It also makes it easy to recognize when the toilet needs servicing, as the blue color turns green, when exposed to waste, over time. The second component of “blueing” is the fragrance. Often reminiscent of bubblegum or cherries, the aroma is intentionally added to the blueing solution to mask any other odors. Neutralizing the smells that naturally arise from waste ensures each user’s experience is as comfortable as possible.

Finally, and perhaps most crucially, the solution contains biocides, substances that can deter, render harmless, or exert a controlling effect on any harmful organism. Here, they break down waste and reduce the spread of bacteria and pathogens that can cause disease. Without biocides, waste material would not only produce a stronger odor but could also pose a public health risk. Incorporating biocides into the blueing solution significantly reduces the risk of disease.
